Susan E. Borrego is the seventh chancellor of the University of Michigan-Flint. She is a student-centered leader with a passion for academics and a dedication to community transformation, as well as a renowned advocate for student success, particularly for traditionally underrepresented students. Since her arrival in 2014, Borrego has led the campus through a period of strategic growth, advancement, and improvement. Milestone moments under her leadership include the creation of the School of Nursing, the fifth school within the university; expanding physical campus space by 25 percent; overseeing a $40 million capital campaign with a priority of additional student support; and navigating and helping the community respond to the Flint water crisis. In addition, Borrego holds a tenured faculty appointment in the School of Education and Human Services. Her ongoing research focuses on issues of student learning and success, developing organizational capacity to serve underrepresented students, and class issues.
How did you first get interested in or involved in higher education issues?
"I have been committed to student success throughout my career," Borrego said. "As a first-generation student and an emancipated minor, my own life was transformed by the opportunity to pursue a college education. Education provides choice and I have wanted to be a part of working in systems that provide students with opportunities. I am committed to doing everything I can to ensure others have the opportunity to achieve their degree education."
Why did you apply to be a part of the Higher Education Committee of 50? What drew you to this opportunity?
"I have had the opportunity to work with a broad range of enrollment and student support functions on my way to becoming a chancellor," Borrego said. "This has allowed me to be deeply involved in programs that proved successful and I am interested in working with others on the critical issues related to student success. Ensuring students have opportunity and greater access to higher education is my highest priority. The chance to play a role in developing ideas that impact policymaking in the areas of access and affordability for students is my primary reason for participating in the [Higher Education Committee of 50]. Increasing financial aid leads to more opportunities for students and subsequently increases student success."
